How to import a Character.AI character into Lore

Lore gives you a direct way to continue with a Character.AI character on web, iOS, or Android. Export the character as a PNG card with embedded data using the third-party CAI Tools browser extension. Then sign in to Lore’s creator site, upload the PNG, review the imported definition, and save it. Your old chat history does not transfer, but you can build a new story around that character with Lore’s personas, model choice, and memory tools.

Before you start

You need a desktop browser with the CAI Tools extension for Chrome or Firefox, access to the character you want to export, and a Lore account. CAI Tools is a third-party extension; read its permissions and use it only with characters you are allowed to export. The export must be a character-card PNG. A screenshot or an ordinary profile image is not enough.

Lore’s import page also gives the current export instructions. If CAI Tools changes its menus, follow its latest interface while making sure the downloaded file is the character card.

Import a character in four steps

1. On desktop, open the character’s chat in Character.AI with CAI Tools installed. Open the chat settings or gear icon, then open the CAI Tools panel.
2. Choose Download and then Character card. Keep the original PNG file; converting it to another image format can remove the embedded character data.
3. Open Import character in Lore, sign in, and upload the PNG. Lore reads the card and opens it as a draft in character creation.
4. Review the name, description, greeting, definitions, image, and visibility. Edit anything that did not map as expected, then save. Open Lore on web, iOS, or Android with the same account to continue with the character.

What transfers, and what does not?

An import is a new character draft, not a live connection between the services. Changes made to either version afterward will not sync. Because different apps organize character fields differently, take a minute to inspect the draft before publishing it or beginning a new conversation.

Why continue the character in Lore?

The card import saves you from rebuilding a character definition by hand. Once you have reviewed the draft, Lore lets you choose a detailed persona for your own role, pick an AI model and response length, pin important moments, and keep a continuing conversation on web or mobile. If the upload does not work

“Choose the PNG character card downloaded from CAI Tools”

Check the file extension and export choice. Lore’s importer expects a PNG, not a JSON export, JPEG, WebP, or screenshot. Re-download the Character card option from CAI Tools.

“No character-card metadata was found”

The picture may be a plain image with no embedded character data. Download the original card again and upload it directly, without sending it through an app that compresses or converts images. The importer reads text stored inside the PNG file.

The character imports, but a detail looks wrong

Treat the result as a starting draft. Review and edit every field before saving, especially the advanced definition and greeting. Lore’s character format may not map every source field in the way you intended.

Can I do the import from my phone?

Once you have the supported PNG, Lore’s mobile app also offers an import route. The CAI Tools export instructions currently use a desktop browser, so exporting on desktop and importing through the creator site is the most straightforward path.
